The Solicitors’ Charity has announced the appointment of two new Trustees, Audrey Ludwig MBE and Edel Smith, who bring extensive experience and fresh insight to the organisation’s Board.
Together, Audrey and Edel will strengthen the Board’s collective expertise across law, finance, and governance, helping the charity continue to support the solicitor profession with compassion, integrity, and strategic vision.
Audrey Ludwig qualified as a solicitor in 1990 and has a distinguished background in equality law, practising in the field from 2006 to 2024. She is the founder of Suffolk Law Centre, a pioneering initiative that has expanded access to justice for vulnerable communities. In recognition of her dedication to equality and human rights, Audrey was awarded an MBE in June 2025.
She now leads Audrey Ludwig Training and Consulting Ltd, providing training to a wide range of groups including legal professionals, advice workers, midwives, the Independent Office for Police Conduct, and individuals with disabilities. Alongside her consultancy work, Audrey is an accomplished lecturer and author, regularly contributing to publications on equality law to foster greater understanding and awareness.
Audrey’s strong commitment to justice and inclusion closely reflects The Solicitors’ Charity’s mission to provide vital assistance to solicitors and their families during times of need.
Edel Smith, a Chartered Accountant, currently serves as Head of Finance & Investments at the Bank Workers Charity. She brings with her a wealth of experience across both the charity and corporate sectors, with specialist expertise in financial management, governance, and long-term strategic planning.
Prior to entering the charity sector in 2019, Edel held senior finance roles at several major insurance firms, including Legal & General, GE, Genworth, and AXA. Her financial acumen will be instrumental in supporting the charity’s trustees in maintaining robust financial governance and oversight.
Edel’s proven record in delivering sound financial stewardship, combined with her passion for enhancing the wellbeing of professional communities, makes her an ideal addition to the charity’s Board.
Nick Gallagher, CEO of The Solicitors’ Charity, said: “We are thrilled to welcome Audrey and Edel to the Trustees Board. Their experience, insight, and shared commitment to taking up these important voluntary roles will greatly benefit the charity.
“I look forward to working with them as we continue to enhance our services for solicitors in times of need to help them thrive.”
