During auto show week, the Javits Center has a distinct scent that combines floor polish, new tire rubber, and the subtle chemical tang of undriven new car interiors. You can see the photographers crouching at low angles, the dealership representatives feigning fatigue, and the children dragging their parents to whatever is illuminated in red as you stroll around the main hall. The 2026 New York International Auto Show began with the same well-known choreography, but this year’s reveals felt more pointed than normal, as if the industry had finally given up on hedging and chosen to show its true hand.

Before the doors even opened, Infiniti’s QX65 was most likely the standout. The SUV’s fastback design, which was inspired by the larger QX60, provides it a distinctive appearance that sets it apart from other vehicles in its class. The cabin strongly pushes toward luxury and screen-heavy technology, but there isn’t a third row—Infiniti appears to have accepted that tradeoff.

As fuel economy standards tighten, automakers are increasingly deciding on a 268-horsepower turbo-four, which is a small figure on paper yet powers all trim levels. There’s a chance that purchasers will desire more authority. Another possibility is that they won’t because the segment has changed enough.

Instead of waiting for journalists to reach New York, Subaru flew them to California. Pre-show theater like that used to seem extravagant. It just seems like brand strategy now. With its gas-electric system, the Forester Wilderness Hybrid, a trail-focused version of an already excellent SUV, promises at least 25% more fuel efficiency. The most intriguing announcement, however, is the all-electric Getaway, a three-row utility with a range of more than 300 miles that will be Subaru’s largest EV when it is released later this year. Subaru, long seen as the EV transition’s slow-moving relative, seems to be finally catching up.

The second-generation Atlas, which will still be manufactured in Tennessee, was introduced by Volkswagen. With bars extending over the front end in a manner that is increasingly common in the industry, the new design relies heavily on lighting as a distinctive element. Without exerting too much effort, the cabin reads luxury.

A turbo-four generates 282 horsepower, which is comfortable but not aggressive. Over the past ten years, it has been a quiet lesson in patience to watch VW manage the American three-row market. They’ve never been able to figure it out. This generation seems to be their most dedicated effort to date.

In the meantime, Kia introduced the EV3 and the updated Seltos to the US market. Although the Seltos is hardly bigger than the previous model, the inside volume has significantly increased, and the appearance carries on Kia’s current design trend. The brand’s smallest electric vehicle will be the EV3, which is based on the same E-GMP platform as the EV6 and EV9.

It is competitive in a market that is rapidly becoming crowded because to its two battery options, front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, and up to 320 miles of range. While other automakers are cutting back, it’s difficult to ignore how carefully Kia has been growing its EV offering.

Finally, Nissan restored something that supporters have been silently requesting for years. Small front-end and chassis improvements were added to the redesigned Z sport coupe, and the NISMO trim—which was previously only available with an automatic—now offers a manual transmission option. It’s a little issue.

Additionally, it’s the kind of little thing that, for a certain type of buyer, becomes a cultural moment. Nissan appears prepared to wager on whether there are still enough of those customers to warrant the engineering expenditure. The Javits audience appeared persuaded, at least in the area surrounding the Z.
