A Florida murder charge carrying a potential capital sentence has been filed against a former military worker who allegedly held a top security clearance, after he is accused of stabbing his girlfriend to death while she was heard pleading for her life on a 911 call.
Kyle Sanchez, 35, has been charged with premeditated first-degree murder with a weapon, a capital felony, according to Fox 13 News. The victim, Amanda Roark, 37, was pronounced dead at the scene of what the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed as a homicide investigation.
The incident occurred just after 3pm on Friday at a three-storey residence in the Palm River townhomes area of Tampa, on Tuscan Loon Drive, according to MySuncoast and other local outlets.
Roark Called 911 as the Attack Was Under Way
According to a probable cause arrest affidavit, Roark called 911 while Sanchez was attacking her. Two phrases she reportedly said during the call were recorded: ‘Please stop’ and ‘You’re f—ing killing me.’
Dispatchers could not obtain her address because the call was too chaotic. Approximately ten minutes later, Sanchez allegedly called 911 himself and told dispatchers: ‘Um, I murdered my girlfriend,’ before providing the address. He also told dispatchers that Roark was ‘beyond help.’
When asked what had happened, Sanchez allegedly said he had experienced ‘a very unfriendly urge’ before he picked up a knife.
When deputies arrived, Sanchez reportedly opened the door covered in blood. Blood was found throughout the home, including on furniture, doors and walls. Roark had suffered multiple stab wounds to her upper body, as well as several defensive wounds, the New York Post reported, citing court documents obtained by local outlet WFLA.
Florida Murder Charge Against a Man Described as Holding Military Security Clearance
Sanchez is described by the New York Post as a former US military worker who reportedly held a top military security clearance at the time of the alleged killing. Authorities have not publicly explained how, if at all, that status is relevant to the investigation or any future proceedings.
Fox 13 News reported that Sanchez remained in hospital on the morning after the incident. The reason for his hospitalisation was not disclosed in available reports.
No motive has been formally advanced by the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office. Sanchez faces a capital felony charge, meaning prosecutors could seek the death penalty, subject to the procedural requirements of Florida law governing capital cases.
The case is at the arrest and charging stage. Subject to any further proceedings, Sanchez will appear before a Florida court where the state will be required to establish the element of premeditation central to the first-degree murder count.
