Mr Morris will remain with the firm as a partner and in an advisory role. According to the announcement, he will continue to advise on the exclusive merger talks with Taylor Wessing.
The incoming chief executive
Mr Linforth is a London-based real estate finance lawyer. His profile on the firm’s website says he has more than 25 years’ experience advising on complex real estate financing transactions, including financings for the Paddington Square, Bankside Yards and Raffles Hotel at the Old War Office developments. As global head of banking and finance he leads one of the firm’s core practice groups. The profile also states that he has been a member of the firm’s Supervisory Council and sits on its Global Leadership Team.
Paul Thwaite, senior partner, said: “James is an experienced and highly respected leader who understands our firm, our clients and our people. He has played a central role in the firm’s success and growth, and he is the right person to lead Stephenson Harwood into its next chapter.”
Mr Linforth said: “It is a privilege to have been appointed Chief Executive of Stephenson Harwood. I look forward to working closely with Eifion, our partners and colleagues to ensure a smooth handover and continued momentum across the firm.”
Leadership change during merger talks
Mr Morris joined Stephenson Harwood as a partner in 2008 and was co-head of its intellectual property practice before becoming chief executive in 2019. In October 2023 the firm re-appointed him for a second five-year term commencing 1 October 2024, so the handover comes a little over two years into that term.
The firm said its strategy, its priorities and its commitment to international growth remain unchanged, “including the ongoing discussions regarding the proposed merger with Taylor Wessing”. The announcement gives no timetable for those discussions.
Mr Morris said he looked forward “to working with James over the coming months to ensure a successful transition.”
