Simpson Millar bolsters Public Law and Human Rights team with latest hire

Catherine Hegarty joins the firm’s London office

Law firm Simpson Millar has continued the expansion of its national Public Law and Human Rights division with the appointment of experienced solicitor, Catherine Hegarty.

In a move which sees Catherine move away from corporate litigation, white collar crime and fraud to pursue a passion for human rights, she will now specialise in cases relating to issues such as trafficking, asylum support, unlawful detention and false imprisonment, children’s and young people’s rights.

She joins the 17-strong London-based Public Law and Human Rights team which supports clients with a range of matters including inquests, claims against public authorities, and judicial review claims.

Previously at corporate law firm Hogan Lovells, she will draw on her experience having delivered on a diverse pro bono caseload, including leading the firm’s pro bono response to the war in Ukraine by helping to set up a free online immigration advice service for individuals fleeing the war.

This is the latest in a string of new hires for Simpson Millar’s expansive and highly regarded Public Law division, which has also recently welcomed Stephanie Oxley and Thomas Metcalfe to its Court of Protection team.

Commenting on Catherine’s arrival Victoria Pogge von Strandmann, a Partner and Simpson Millar’s Head of Public Law and Human Rights, said: “We’re very pleased to welcome Catherine onboard.

“Her passion and commitment to giving clear legal advice and high-quality representation to people who have been let down by a local or central public authority really shines through and I am certain she’ll make a great addition to the team.”

“Simpson Millar has a long-standing reputation for drawing attention to injustices within society – bringing landmark challenges that have wider policy implications, and for using the law to deliver results for its clients.
