AI-powered cybersecurity now essential for legal firms, says leading IT company

Linten Technologies says new threat types means it is moving all its clients onto an AI-based solution.

Manchester-based Linten Technologies, which last year celebrated its 25th anniversary, has announced it is moving all its clients onto an AI-based cybersecurity platform that is capable of meeting new and emerging threats.

The company’s legal clients face unprecedented cybersecurity challenges, with the Law Society Gazette reporting last August that successful attacks against UK law firms rose by a staggering 77% over the previous year.

Traditional antivirus (AV) solutions rely primarily on identifying threats based on known malware signatures, but cybercriminals are becoming increasingly sophisticated, using advanced tactics such as social engineering and zero-day attacks to bypass traditional AV and firewall solutions.

Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) goes beyond current AV solutions by providing continuous monitoring and analysis of endpoint activities. They collect data on endpoint events, such as file changes, process executions, and network connections, and use AI-powered behavioural analysis to detect suspicious or anomalous behaviour.

When a threat is detected, EDR can automatically isolate the affected endpoint, terminate malicious processes, and alert security teams.

Steven Allan, CEO at Linten, said; “Everyone will remember the WannaCry ransomware attack, which is probably the best known example of where AV was bypassed but EDR succeeded. It exploited a Windows vulnerability, affected nearly a quarter of a million computers globally, and caused significant financial losses.

“The NHS was particularly badly hit, with hospitals going offline and thousands of appointments and operations cancelled.

“EDR detected and stopped the spread of WannaCry by spotting unusual behaviours and malicious activities.”

Linten’s solution is built on SentinelOne’s EDR technology.

SentinelOne is a recognised leader in endpoint protection, and for the fourth year in a row has been named a Leader in the 2024 Gartner® Magic Quadrant™ for Endpoint Protection Platforms.

Steven Allan added; “The nature and scale of cybersecurity threats is evolving rapidly and protecting IT systems and networks is a constant challenge.

“Today’s AV software is essentially reactive, relying on keeping up to date lists of known viruses. This is no longer good enough.

“Our clients need to know they are fully protected, so we made the decision to adopt and roll out advanced AI-based threat detection and response software to all of them.”

Allan added; “If a ransomware attack is detected, EDR can immediately isolate the infected device, preventing the spread of malware and minimising damage.”

On top of their EDR package, Linten offers even more protection with their Managed Detection and Response (MDR) solution.

MDR combines advanced technology with expert human analysis, ensuring comprehensive security coverage.

Allan concluded; “While traditional antivirus is effective against known threats, EDR and MDR provide more advanced and proactive approaches to dealing with a broader range of cybersecurity challenges, incorporating behavioural analysis and human intervention to enhance detection and response capabilities.

“MDR is also ideal for organisations with stringent compliance requirements as it automatically generates reports showing threat detection, investigation, and response activities.”

With advanced AI technology, MDR identifies and deals with risks associated with privilege abuse, account takeovers, and insider threats, safeguarding critical business systems.

Linten moved last year to bigger offices, recently hired two new staff members, and is actively looking to boost its technical capabilities in AI technology and tools.

The company has already delivered several interactive sessions for clients and the wider business community on the impacts of AI.

Allan concluded: “These new AI-powered tools can work alongside traditional AV to provide the most comprehensive cybersecurity, but fundamentally we believe EDR is no longer just a nice to have.

“All companies need to be aware that new threat types are appearing with increasing regularity, and that advanced solutions that go beyond checking malware signatures are now essential if they are to stay fully protected.”
