Six lawyers will join Farrer & Co’s senior ranks on 1 May, the London-based firm confirmed Tuesday. The promotions—four to partner, two to senior counsel—span corporate law, dispute resolution, employment and the firm’s internal risk operation.

The announcement arrived as the independent firm marks its 325th year in practice.

Georgina Fraser, Oliver Blundell and Oliver Lock will each take up partnerships in corporate, dispute resolution and reputation management respectively. Gary Hopkins, currently serving as Risk and Compliance Director, will also join the partnership—a notable elevation for a non-client-facing role. Meanwhile, Alexis Hille and Rachel Nolloth secured promotions to senior counsel in private client and employment work.

Laurie Horwood, who sits on the firm’s Management Board, acknowledged the breadth of expertise being recognised. “Georgina, Oliver and Oliver have each demonstrated exceptional technical ability, commercial insight and dedication to our clients. Gary, as our Risk and Compliance Director, has shown dedicated leadership of his team and deep expertise in this crucial function. Alexis and Rachel have also made a significant impact through their expertise and leadership. We are delighted to welcome them to their new roles.”

The six promotions signal continued expansion at a firm that has remained independent whilst rivals joined international networks or merged with larger practices. Founded in 1701, Farrer & Co built its reputation advising families, institutions and businesses at the intersection of private wealth and private capital. That positioning has kept the firm competitive in an increasingly consolidated legal market.

Partnership promotions at law firms typically occur on 1 May, aligning with the start of new financial years. The timing allows firms to refresh their leadership structures and reward lawyers who’ve built client relationships and technical reputations over several years. Senior counsel roles, by contrast, recognise specialist expertise without the full governance and financial responsibilities that come with equity partnership.

Hopkins’ elevation stands out. Risk and compliance directors rarely ascend to partnership at City law firms, where client billing and business development traditionally drive promotion decisions. His inclusion suggests Farrer & Co views internal governance as integral to its competitive positioning—particularly as regulatory scrutiny of legal practices intensifies across the sector.

The firm’s practice areas reflect its niche. Whilst major City competitors chase high-value M&A deals and international arbitration work, Farrer & Co focuses on tax, philanthropy, safeguarding and real estate alongside more conventional corporate and contentious matters. That breadth, according to the firm, allows it to serve clients across “all aspects of the law, wherever the need arises.”

For Fraser, Blundell and Lock, partnership represents the culmination of years navigating the associate track—a path that involves building casework expertise, developing client relationships and demonstrating what firms call “commercial insight.” Hille and Nolloth’s senior counsel appointments offer similar recognition within a structure that allows them to focus on technical advisory work.

The promotions will take effect this Thursday.
