An enterprise legal AI specialist has appointed a dedicated vice president for Africa, signalling confidence in the continent’s appetite for artificial intelligence-powered legal technology as adoption accelerates across major markets.
Luminance, which describes itself as the global leader in Legal-Grade AI for the enterprise, announced on 15 January 2026 that Jonty Koekemoer will lead its newly established South African regional hub and spearhead expansion efforts across the continent.
The move comes as the company recorded substantial growth in the region over the past 12 months. Subscription customers headquartered in South Africa have increased by 66%, whilst both deal volume and total contract value have risen significantly. The uptick reflects broader adoption across sectors including financial services, energy and professional services.
Major South African corporations have already integrated Luminance’s AI platform into their operations. Sasol, OM Bank, Purple Group and Standard Bank are among the organisations using the technology to streamline legal department functions and support wider business objectives.
According to Eleanor Lightbody, CEO of Luminance, the African market presents compelling opportunities for responsible AI deployment. “Africa represents an incredibly exciting opportunity for Luminance. We are seeing growing demand from teams who want to harness AI responsibly to manage complexity and scale. Establishing a presence in South Africa allows us to better support our customers today while laying the foundations for long-term growth across the continent,” she said.
Koekemoer brings more than 13 years of corporate experience across African markets to his new role. The South African native has previously held senior positions at AI-driven technology companies, where he led strategic partnerships and regional growth initiatives. His academic credentials include a PhD focusing on innovation and the future of technology within the African context, blending technical expertise with commercial acumen.
In his position at Luminance, Koekemoer will oversee the development of the company’s African footprint, working with law firms, corporate clients and partners to drive legal AI adoption across the continent.
Reflecting on the opportunity, Koekemoer highlighted the pressures facing legal professionals in the region. “Africa’s legal sector is at an important inflection point as pressure grows to do more with less, all while navigating increasing regulatory and commercial complexity. Luminance’s Legal-Grade(tm) AI is uniquely positioned to support this evolution, and I’m excited to help build our presence across Africa, working closely with customers and partners to drive meaningful, sustainable impact,” he noted.
The company’s decision to establish South Africa as its regional headquarters stems from the country’s mature legal ecosystem. Leading law firms and corporate legal teams in the market have shown increasing willingness to adopt AI solutions to handle complex transactions, respond to regulatory pressures and identify new opportunities.
A local presence is expected to deepen existing client relationships whilst enabling closer regional collaboration, faster support services and access to local expertise. The South African base will also serve as a springboard for expansion into other high-growth African markets, with Kenya and Nigeria identified as priority territories.
Sascha Graham, VP of Legal at Purple Group, spoke about the impact of Luminance’s technology on her organisation’s operations. “In a fast-moving, digitally driven financial services environment, speed, consistency and confidence are critical to maintaining a competitive edge. Luminance has enabled our legal team to work more efficiently across complex contracts while supporting the broader business to move faster and make better-informed decisions,” she said.
The announcement follows recent investment secured by Luminance to support its international scaling efforts and comes amid continued global growth for the company.
Developed by AI experts from the University of Cambridge, Luminance’s Legal-Grade AI platform aims to transform enterprise decision-making by converting contracts from administrative burdens into strategic intelligence. The multi-agent system automates workflows spanning creation, negotiation, risk review and compliance. It analyses clauses, assesses legal and commercial implications, executes actions and learns from each negotiation to become increasingly aligned with business needs.
The company currently serves more than 1,000 of the world’s largest enterprises across over 70 countries, helping organisations manage risk, identify opportunities and maintain competitive advantages.
