Rayner Grice, national family team leader at Clarke Willmott, earned Leading Lawyer status in Doyle’s Guide’s latest rankings, whilst fellow partner Adam Maguire claimed Recommended Lawyer recognition for Birmingham and the Midlands.

The accolades arrived alongside a Second Tier ranking for Clarke Willmott’s Birmingham family law practice in the directory’s Greater Birmingham family, divorce and matrimonial law category.

Doyle’s Guide builds its rankings through peer recommendations and industry research. The directory has carved out a niche in UK legal circles as a barometer of professional reputation—lawyers nominating lawyers, rather than client testimonials or firm-submitted data driving the results.

“Recognition in Doyle’s Guide is a testament to the dedication of our Birmingham family team, and I’m personally proud to have been named a Leading Lawyer,” Grice said. “It reflects the respect of our peers and our commitment to supporting clients through challenging and sensitive family law matters, delivering clear advice and achieving the best outcomes for the families we work with.”

The rankings land three years after Maguire joined Clarke Willmott in 2022, his specialism in divorce and family law now validated by the same peer-driven process that elevated Grice.

“Family law matters are deeply personal and often challenging, so it’s important that clients have access to expert guidance and support throughout the process,” Maguire said. “I’m proud to be part of such a dedicated team, and this recognition highlights the expertise and commitment of everyone in our Birmingham office.”

Clarke Willmott operates across seven offices—Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, London, Manchester, Southampton and Taunton. The firm’s family law division handles divorce proceedings, matrimonial disputes and related matters across these regions, with Grice overseeing the national practice from Birmingham.

The Second Tier designation places the Birmingham team within the directory’s upper rankings, though one tier below the top-rated firms in the Greater Birmingham market. Legal directories typically feature multiple tiers to segment practices by reputation, case complexity and peer recognition.

For Grice, the Leading Lawyer title represents the directory’s highest individual recognition tier. Maguire’s Recommended Lawyer status sits one level below, marking him as a rising practitioner within the Birmingham and Midlands family law community.

Doyle’s Guide publishes rankings across various UK legal markets and practice areas. The directory’s methodology relies heavily on peer nominations, asking solicitors and barristers to identify leading practitioners in their fields—a process that tends to favour established relationships and long-standing reputations.

The Birmingham office’s recognition comes as family law practices across the UK navigate increased demand for divorce and separation advice. Recent years have seen shifts in how couples approach marital breakdown, with more emphasis on alternative dispute resolution and collaborative law processes rather than courtroom battles.

Clarke Willmott’s family practice handles cases ranging from straightforward divorces to complex financial settlements involving business assets, inheritance disputes and international elements. The firm’s multi-office structure allows it to serve clients across England and Wales, with specialists in each location.

The March rankings provide a snapshot of how Birmingham’s legal community views the competitive landscape for family law services. Greater Birmingham’s legal market includes numerous regional and national firms competing for high-value matrimonial work, making peer recognition particularly significant.

Neither Grice nor Maguire disclosed specific case numbers or client outcomes that may have influenced their rankings. Doyle’s Guide does not publish the voting data or nomination counts behind its designations, maintaining confidentiality around the peer review process.

The rankings will remain current until Doyle’s Guide publishes its next update, typically on an annual cycle. For practices like Clarke Willmott’s Birmingham team, maintaining directory presence requires consistent delivery and sustained peer respect—markers that can influence client choice when selecting family law representation.
