A tax and succession planning solicitor has made a return to the Midlands legal practice where he previously worked, taking up a partnership position as the firm expands its specialist advisory services.
Tom Evans has rejoined mfg Solicitors after spending several years at a national law firm, bringing his expertise back to the practice’s Birmingham base in the Colmore Business District. His appointment marks a significant boost to the firm’s newly established Tax and Succession Planning division.
The move represents something of a homecoming for Evans, who first joined mfg Solicitors in 2017 before departing in 2022. His return comes at a time when the firm is actively developing its tax advisory capabilities, particularly in the Birmingham market.
Reflecting on his decision to rejoin the practice, Evans expressed enthusiasm about the timing and opportunity. “It’s a wonderful opportunity for me to rejoin the firm and I feel it’s the perfect time,” he said.
He elaborated on the factors that drew him back: “I decided to return because of the opportunity to join a growing, highly collaborative Tax and Succession Planning team, particularly due to our ongoing expansion in Birmingham.”
Evans, who has built a reputation for his work with owner-managed businesses and farming families, will take on a broad remit within the firm. His responsibilities will encompass succession and estate planning, inheritance tax matters, Capital Gains Tax planning, and trusts work. He will also handle partnership agreements and provide support on corporate restructuring matters.
The new partner will report directly to Sally Smith, herself a partner at the firm, whilst also collaborating closely with colleagues in the Corporate team. His role is designed to bridge various practice areas, reflecting the increasingly complex nature of tax planning for businesses and wealthy families.
Smith welcomed Evans’s return with clear confidence in what he brings to the practice. “Tom is an exceptional solicitor with a reputation for successfully dealing with complex tax cases, especially in the agriculture and rural business sectors,” she said.
She added: “We are building an extremely strong tax and succession planning team and Tom adds another dimension to that. Based in our growing Birmingham office, he is already making an impact with clients and across the firm. I look forward to working closely with him in the years ahead.”
The appointment underscores mfg Solicitors’ strategic focus on strengthening its tax advisory services at a time when such expertise is increasingly sought after. Changes to tax legislation and the complexities facing family businesses and agricultural enterprises have created growing demand for specialist guidance.
Evans’s particular expertise in the agriculture and rural business sectors positions him well to serve a key client base in the Midlands region, where farming families and rural enterprises often require sophisticated succession and tax planning advice.
Looking ahead, Evans signalled his ambitions for the role and the team. “It is a really natural fit, and I am keen to play a key role in developing the firm’s tax, succession and agricultural private client offering well into the future,” he said.
The Birmingham office, where Evans is based, represents a growth area for mfg Solicitors. The firm maintains a regional presence across the Midlands, with offices in Worcester, Kidderminster, Bromsgrove, the Black Country, Ludlow and Telford.
His return illustrates a broader trend in professional services where experienced practitioners sometimes circle back to former employers after gaining additional experience elsewhere. Such moves can bring fresh perspectives whilst maintaining existing relationships and institutional knowledge.
For mfg Solicitors, the appointment strengthens a practice area that has become increasingly important to law firms serving business clients and high-net-worth individuals. Tax and succession planning work often intersects with corporate transactions, property matters and family law, making it a strategic capability for full-service practices.
The firm provides a range of commercial, agricultural and private client services across its Midlands footprint. Evans’s appointment to the partnership suggests confidence in the continued development of the tax practice and the Birmingham office in particular.
